ChatGPT Ads in Pittsburgh.

Your customer stopped typing three words into a search box. They describe the actual problem, go back and forth for a few minutes, and come out with one or two names. Advertising now runs inside that conversation, and it is genuinely buyable today. There is also a catch that almost nobody selling it will mention to you, and it is the first thing we are going to tell you.

01 — Where This Stands

This Is Not a Preview. It Shipped, and Most Owners Have Not Noticed.

OpenAI announced ad testing in January 2026, ads went live in the United States that February, and a self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta in May with access rolling out from a waitlist. Expansion into 31 European markets follows in August. So the question has moved on to whether it fits your business, which is a much harder question and the one this page is about.

Under the Answer, Clearly Labeled

The format is a sponsored unit at the bottom of an answer, kept visually separate from it. It is not woven into the response and it is not dressed up as a recommendation. OpenAI has stated that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.

Free and Go Tiers Only

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers see no ads at all, and free users can opt out in exchange for fewer daily messages. So the audience is real and large, and it excludes the people paying for the heaviest use.

There Is a Real Ads Manager

Campaigns, ad groups, conversion setup, reporting, a measurement pixel and a conversions API, plus a full ads API. This is built like an ad platform. It is still beta, and access arrives through a waitlist.

02 — The Catch Nobody Leads With

You Can Target a Television Market. You Cannot Target Your Town.

Here is the part that decides whether any of this is worth your money, and it is the part that gets left out of every excited article about the new channel. The geo targeting OpenAI documents is country, region or DMA. A DMA is a television market. For us that is the Pittsburgh DMA, which reaches a great deal further than your van is ever going to drive.

What Is Documented

Country, Region, DMA

The smallest published unit is a whole media market.

That works cleanly for a brand selling into a metro, a franchise with coverage across it, or a business whose customer can be anywhere in the region. Those advertisers get a straightforward, sensible platform to buy.

Custom audiences and bid adjustments exist alongside it, and bidding is on a cost per click or cost per thousand impressions basis. That much is in the platform's own documentation.

What Is Not

City, ZIP Code, Radius

None of it appears in the documentation.

If you serve six towns along the Allegheny, a DMA buy means paying to reach a market many times the size of the area you can take work from. That can still work, but it changes the math enough that nobody can hand you an honest cost per lead before we have looked at your numbers.

Anyone telling you they can target your town on ChatGPT today is describing something OpenAI has not published. Ask them where it says so.

03 — Why This Is Not Google Ads Again

One Buyer Is Mid-Search. The Other Is Mid-Conversation.

The two channels catch a person at genuinely different moments, and that changes what you would even want to say. It also changes which half of the work matters most, in a way that catches experienced advertisers out.

Google

Three Words and a List

You are competing to be in the list.

Somebody types emergency plumber Vandergrift and gets a page of options. They have told the machine almost nothing about themselves, so the ad is aimed at the keyword, and the paid results sit at the top where the eye lands first.

It works because the intent arrived before the search did. The buyer had already decided, and you only need to be the one they find.

ChatGPT

Five Minutes and a Shortlist

You are competing to be in the answer.

By the time anything sponsored appears, the person has described the real situation. The age of the house, the budget, what the last contractor got wrong. The assistant has already filtered on all of it and written a conclusion, and the ad sits underneath that conclusion rather than above it.

Which flips the usual priority. The recommendation people trust is the organic one, it is not for sale, and OpenAI says paying does not move it. So the unpaid work is the more valuable half here.

04 — What Nobody Can Tell You

The Numbers Everyone Is Quoting Have No Source.

Search for what ChatGPT ads cost and you will find confident figures for minimum daily budgets and average click prices. Trace any of them back and they end at another agency's blog post. OpenAI has not published them, so we are not going to repeat them at you as though they were facts.

Genuinely Not Published

  • Any minimum daily budget. The figures going around are unsourced, and we will find out yours by running it.
  • Any benchmark click or impression price. Bidding is documented as cost per click and cost per thousand. The prices themselves have not been published.
  • How the auction works. Never officially described, so nobody optimizing against it is optimizing against anything real yet.
  • Targeting below the DMA, and any interest or demographic targeting. Not in the documentation, whatever you have been told.

What We Do Have

The platform documentation read first-hand, so what we tell you about campaigns, conversion tracking and targeting comes from the source and we can show you where.

A clear line between what is verified and what is invented, which on a channel this new is worth more than a confident opinion. Most of the advice being sold right now cannot tell you which half it is standing on.

And the two channels either side of this one. Google Ads and local search are where your money works today, and any honest recommendation about ChatGPT has to be made next to those.

05 — What the Work Is

Half of This Job Is the Ad. The More Valuable Half Is Not.

Because the sponsored unit sits under an answer that cannot be bought, running this well means working both sides at once. Buying the placement is the straightforward part. Being the business the assistant names above it is the part that compounds.

01

Decide Whether You Should Buy at All

First honest pass is the geography. What fraction of the Pittsburgh DMA can you serve, what a job is worth to you, and whether the arithmetic survives paying to reach the rest of it. Sometimes the answer is not yet, and you will hear that answer from us for free.

02

Build It Properly, With Tracking First

Campaign and ad group structure inside the Ads Manager, the measurement pixel and conversions wired up before a dollar is spent, and a landing page built for the thing the ad promises. Untracked spend on a brand new channel is a donation.

03

Read It Honestly, and Say So

Early data on a young platform is noisy, and the temptation is to narrate it into a success. You get what was spent, what came back, what we changed and why, in plain English, including the months where the conclusion is that this is not paying its way yet.

04

Win the Unpaid Half

Assistants answer from what they can read about you: your pages, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, the directories carrying your details. Making that consistent and specific is what gets you named in the answer, and it keeps working in ordinary search whatever happens to this channel.

That fourth step is not an add-on we invented for this page. It is the same ground covered by answer engine optimization and local SEO, and it is the part we would tell you to do first if you only had budget for one of them.

06 — What It Costs

Quoted per Business, and Your Ad Spend Stays Yours.

There is no printed fee on this page, for a reason we will say out loud. On a channel where the platform has published no budget floor and no benchmark click price, a fixed number on a web page would be a guess dressed as a policy.

The Management Fee

Quoted once we know your trade, how much of the DMA you can serve, and what you need to measure. You get the number before you commit to anything, and it does not scale with your spend, so we never make more by telling you to spend more.

If the honest quote is that this is not worth running for you yet, that is what you get told, and the conversation costs you nothing either way.

Your Ad Spend

Separate from the fee, on your own card, paid to OpenAI directly. We never mark it up and we never touch it. The account is yours, and if you leave, we come off the permissions and everything in it stays where it already was.

We will not name a monthly spend on this page either. Anyone who does, on a platform that has published no minimum, is repeating a number they read somewhere.

07 — Your Four Options

Four Ways to Handle a Channel This New, Compared Honestly.

945 Studios The agency with a launch offer Running it yourself Ignoring it
Tells you about the DMA limit First thing on the page Rarely, it kills the pitch You find out after you spend Not applicable
Quotes a cost per lead up front No. Nobody honestly can yet Usually, from an unsourced blog No Not applicable
Works the unpaid half too Yes, and it is the bigger half Sold separately if at all Rarely, it is slow work No
Conversion tracking before spend Pixel and conversions first Ask to see it Often skipped Not applicable
Will say do not run this yet When that is the answer Not while it is the product Hard to judge from inside By default, unexamined
08 — Where We Fit, and Where We Do Not

Worth Saying Plainly, Before You Spend Twenty Minutes on a Call.

This Is for You If

  • You can serve a decent share of the Pittsburgh market, so a market-wide buy is not mostly waste.
  • Your Google Ads and local search are already working, and this is the next thing.
  • You can fund a real test for a few months and judge it on tracked conversions.
  • You want to be named in the answer, and you understand that half takes longer.

This Is Not for You If

  • You work in three towns and nowhere else. Until the targeting goes below the DMA, most of that spend reaches people you cannot serve.
  • You need the phone ringing in two weeks. That is a paid search job, and the Google Ads page is the honest place to start.
  • You want a guaranteed cost per lead in writing. On a channel this young, that is a work of fiction.
  • You want a guarantee that the assistant recommends you. Nobody controls what a model says, and paying does not move it either.

Do not take our word for any of this, least of all on a channel that changes every few months. Hand this page to an AI that has no stake in the answer, tell it about your business, and let it check the current status and tell you whether this deserves your money yet.

Opens in ChatGPT or Claude with the question already written. We do not see the conversation, and we do not get to edit the answer.

09 — Questions

The Things People Ask Before They Sign.

Are ChatGPT ads real yet?

Yes. OpenAI announced testing in January 2026, ads went live in the United States in February 2026, and a self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta in May 2026, with access rolling out from a waitlist. Expansion into 31 European markets follows in August 2026.

The format is a labeled sponsored unit at the bottom of an answer, kept visually separate from the answer itself, and it appears only on the free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers do not see ads at all, and free users can opt out in exchange for fewer daily messages.

Can I target just my town?

Not from what OpenAI documents. The geo targeting published in the ads API is country, region or DMA. A DMA is a television market, so for us that is the Pittsburgh DMA, which stretches far past anywhere a service van is realistically going to drive. There is no documented city, ZIP code or radius targeting.

That is the most important sentence on this page for a local business, because it means you are paying to be shown across a market much larger than your service area, and nobody can quote you an honest cost per lead until we know how much of that spend lands on people you can serve.

What does it cost?

Bidding is documented as cost per click and cost per thousand impressions. Beyond that we will not give you a number, because OpenAI has not published one. The minimum daily budgets and click prices circulating in agency blog posts right now are not sourced to OpenAI, and repeating them to you as fact would be exactly the behavior this page exists to argue against.

Our management fee is quoted per business once we know your trade, your market and what you are trying to measure. Ad spend is separate, it goes to OpenAI on your own card, and we never mark it up.

How is this different from Google Ads?

The buyer is in a different position. On Google somebody types three words and picks from a list, so the job is being in the list at the moment of the search. In ChatGPT they have often been talking for several minutes, describing the actual problem, and the assistant has already narrowed things down before any ad appears.

The ad also sits underneath the answer rather than above the results, so the recommendation people trust is the organic one and it is not for sale. OpenAI has stated plainly that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. That makes being named organically the more valuable half of this, which is not how paid search usually works.

Should I run these instead of Google Ads?

No, and we will say that on the call even though it means selling you something smaller. Google is where somebody with an emergency already went looking, the targeting goes down to your actual service area, and the channel is understood.

ChatGPT is a genuine new surface with real reach and a targeting model that does not yet fit a local service business neatly. The sensible order for most trades is Google first, then this as an addition when the core is working, not as a replacement for it.

Will you guarantee ChatGPT recommends my business?

No, and nobody honest will. The sources these systems cite turn over constantly, the same question asked twice can name different businesses, and there is no ranking to buy or verify. Paying for an ad does not buy it either, since OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers.

What we can do is make you the easiest business in your category for a model to read, understand and cite, and track whether you get named across a set of real questions month to month.

What do I need in place before we start?

A tracked destination and a consistent set of facts about your business. The measurement pixel and conversions go in before a dollar is spent, and the ad points at a page built for the thing it promises, so you can see what the spend bought.

Alongside that, your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the directories carrying your details need to say the same specific things, because that is what an assistant reads when it decides which businesses to name in the answer above the ad. We handle both sides, and the second one keeps paying you back in ordinary search whatever happens to this channel.

Tell Us Your Trade and Your Towns. We'll Tell You If This Is Worth It.

One conversation, no deck. What you do, where you can get to, and what is already working. We come back with a straight answer on whether a market-wide buy makes arithmetic sense for a business your size, what it would cost to run properly, and what to fix first if the honest answer is that something else matters more this quarter. Most of this work is for businesses across the Pittsburgh metro. If the site is the weak link, a page live in 299 minutes fixes that before you buy a click anywhere.
